This is an unofficial explainer. We are not AICTE, UGC, the Ministry of Education or the operators of the National Internship Portal. It is published by Saiket Systems, whose own internships are separate from the portal.
AICTE internship eligibility is not one rule with a single minimum year. Three separate rulebooks apply: the portal’s registration rules, your college’s internship framework set by AICTE or UGC, and each posting’s own conditions. This guide explains each rulebook, turns the year-wise frameworks into a semester planner, shows how credits convert to hours and weeks, and ends with a checklist and the questions to put to your college.
What we checked
We read AICTE’s Internship Policy through excerpts and explainers, UGC’s internship and apprenticeship guidelines through ugc.gov.in documents and press reports, and portal pages and postings earlier in this review. We reviewed everything on 21 October 2026. The portal’s FAQ answer on second-year eligibility was not visible to us. Evidence is labelled Portal, Policy (AICTE or UGC text), Archive (an older posting) or Reported (a guide or news report we could not confirm).
Quick overview
| Item | Detail |
| Portal registration | Open to AICTE, UGC, IGNOU and other students with a student ID and ID card image (Portal) |
| A portal-wide minimum year | None found; postings set their own (Portal, Archive) |
| AICTE’s internship policy | A guidance document for approved technical institutions, not a rule that binds students (Reported) |
| AICTE credit target | 14 to 20 credits for a degree and 10 to 14 for a three-year diploma (Policy) |
| UGC undergraduate rule | An internship of 60 to 120 hours after the fourth semester (Policy, Reported) |
| Who decides what counts | Your institute, not the portal |
| Support | 011-29581423 and 07314624949 (Mon to Fri, 9 am to 6 pm IST); internship@aicte-india.org |
For the portal-level claims guides get wrong, such as “second year only,” see our [portal eligibility guide: add link]. This post covers the frameworks that decide your year.
The three rulebooks
| Rulebook | Who sets it | What it decides | Where to read it |
| Portal | AICTE and the portal team | Whether you can register and apply at all | Registration form |
| Framework | AICTE (technical institutions) or UGC (universities) | When your college plans internships, how long they run, and how credits are counted | Policy documents and your college handbook |
| Posting | The host organisation | Year, stream, CGPA, graduation window, citizenship and availability | The posting’s “who can apply” box |
A “yes” in one does not carry to the next. You can register on the portal, sit in the right year for your college’s framework and still fail a posting’s CGPA line.
What AICTE’s policy says
AICTE’s Internship Policy is addressed to institutions. It proposes a minimum of 14 to 20 credits of internship, project, seminar and inter or intra-institutional training toward a four-year degree, and 10 to 14 credits for a three-year diploma. It suggests institutes send students out at least twice, once after the second year and once after the third or final year. The policy text puts the total at about 600 to 700 hours.
The suggested slots below are as summarised by guides, so confirm exact weeks and credits in the policy or your handbook.
| Slot | Suggested duration | Typical activity | Credits |
| Vacation after the 2nd semester | 3 to 4 weeks | Inter or intra-institutional activities | 3 to 4 |
| Vacation after the 4th semester | 4 to 6 weeks | Industry or community internship | 4 to 6 |
| Vacation after the 6th semester | 4 to 6 weeks | Internship, mainly for degree students | 4 to 6 (3 to 4 for diploma) |
| 8th semester | 3 to 4 weeks | Project work and seminar | 3 to 4 |
For postgraduate programmes, the policy sets an industrial project in Semester III of 20 weeks worth 10 credits and one in Semester IV of 32 weeks worth 20 credits.
What UGC says
UGC’s guidelines apply to students in university programmes, including those who register on the portal as UGC students.
| UGC rule | Detail |
| Undergraduate internship | 60 to 120 hours after the 4th semester, worth 2 to 4 credits, mandatory for UG degree programmes under the guidelines |
| Credit conversion | One credit equals two hours a week, or 30 hours in a 15-week semester |
| Four-year Honours with Research | A 360-hour dissertation or research project in the 8th semester, worth 12 credits |
| Apprenticeship-embedded degrees | At least one full semester, never the first semester, with the last semester allowed; a six-month apprenticeship is worth 20 credits (600 hours) |
The undergraduate internship rule comes from UGC’s guidelines as reported in the press and the draft text, and the apprenticeship figures come from UGC’s 2025 AEDP document. Your university decides how it applies them.
Credits, hours and weeks
Credit values differ by framework, so convert before you compare an internship with your requirement.
| Framework | One credit is about | Typical requirement | Rough full-time weeks |
| AICTE, degree | 40 to 45 hours | 14 to 20 credits, about 600 to 700 hours in total | 13 to 16 across the degree |
| AICTE, diploma | 40 to 45 hours | 10 to 14 credits, about 450 to 500 hours | 10 to 11 |
| UGC, undergraduate | 30 hours | 2 to 4 credits, 60 to 120 hours | 1 to 3 |
| UGC, apprenticeship | 30 hours | 20 credits for six months, 600 hours | About 26 |
The week estimates are our arithmetic, assuming a 45-hour full-time week, which the AICTE policy uses. Under AICTE’s framework, a full-time week is therefore worth roughly one credit. A four-week summer internship covers about four credits, which is a useful sanity check when a posting lists its credits.
Year-wise rules: a semester planner
This table combines the frameworks with what we saw in postings. It is our synthesis, not an official rule.
| Your stage | What your college framework usually plans | What postings we read accepted | Formats to aim for | Watch out for |
| First year (semesters 1 and 2) | No internship slot; activity points and campus activities | Some cohorts accept any year (EduSkills postings, Portal) | Register early, build your profile, take a weekly or short cohort | Postings that expect prior coursework |
| Second year (3 and 4) | A short slot after the 2nd semester; an internship after the 4th; UGC’s 60 to 120 hours after the 4th | Any-year training cohorts; many skill-based postings | Monthly, over a vacation | Whether your college approves it |
| Third year (5 and 6) | An internship slot after the 6th semester for degree students | Engineering-stream postings such as NHAI’s | Monthly or semester | Clashes with placement season |
| Final year (7 and 8) | Project work and seminar; UGC Honours with Research dissertation | Final-year-only postings exist (2023 highway posting, Archive) | Semester-length or work-based learning | CGPA cut-offs and thesis overlap |
| Postgraduate (MBA, M.Tech) | Semester III and IV industrial projects of 20 and 32 weeks | Management and postgraduate postings exist | Semester-length | Your department’s own schedule |
| Diploma | The same slots as degrees, with fewer credits | Archived rural postings listed diploma candidates | Monthly | Graduation windows and age rules |
| Distance learner (IGNOU) | AICTE’s tables do not cover you; the portal does | Not stated | Remote and hybrid, weekly or monthly | Your own university’s credit rules |
| Recent graduate | No framework | Some postings favour recent graduates | Check each posting | The registration form asks for a student ID |
If you sit between rows, follow your college’s calendar, not this table.
Posting-level rules you will meet
Postings add conditions the frameworks never mention. Examples from postings we read:
- Stream lists. The NHAI page names six engineering streams.
- Year and CGPA. An archived highway-ministry posting asked for final-year civil students with a CGPA of at least 7.0.
- Graduation windows. An archived rural posting required graduation in 2020–21 or later.
- Citizenship. The same posting limited applicants to Indian citizens.
- Availability. Many postings need the whole period, and some include on-site days.
- Membership. EduSkills postings required students at member institutions.
None of these appear on the portal’s registration screen, so read the “who can apply” box on every posting before you spend time on it.
Common misunderstandings
| Claim | What the evidence shows |
| “AICTE makes an internship mandatory for every student” | The policy is guidance for institutions, so your college decides, though UGC’s undergraduate rule makes an internship mandatory in UG programmes |
| “You must apply after the second year” | AICTE suggests slots for colleges. The portal sets no universal minimum year, and postings vary |
| “Any internship counts for credits” | Your institute approves what counts, usually before you start |
| “Credits mean the same everywhere” | AICTE and UGC use different hours per credit |
| “A portal certificate satisfies my college automatically” | Your college may still need an attendance record, an evaluation or an approval letter |
The AICTE policy includes formats such as an evaluation form and an attendance sheet, as reported. Ask your college which of these it requires.
Ask your college before you apply
Put these questions to your training and placement officer:
- Which internship slots does our programme plan, and in which semesters?
- How many credits or hours must I complete in total?
- Do portal internships count, and do I need approval before I accept?
- What documents does the college need at the end: certificate, evaluation, attendance sheet or report?
- Can I do a semester-length internship, or only a vacation one?
- Who validates my portal profile, and how long does it take?
Keep the answers in writing. They matter more than any guide, including this one.

The eligibility checklist
- Am I enrolled, with a student ID and an ID card? Yes / No
- Does my college’s framework plan an internship in the period I am applying for? Yes / No
- Does my stream, year and CGPA meet the posting’s box? Yes / No
- Will my college accept this internship toward credits or requirements? Yes / No
- Can I commit the whole period and reach the location? Yes / No
If the first answer is No, call the helpline before you register. If the second is No, you can still apply, but plan to do it as a non-credit internship. If the third is No, move to a different posting. If the fourth is No, ask your college what would make it count.
Is it worth checking all this?
Yes. Most failed applications are not rejected on merit. They fail because of a year, stream or approval rule the student did not read. Ten minutes with your handbook and one conversation with your training and placement officer prevents most of them.
FAQs
Is there a minimum year to apply on the portal? We found no portal-wide minimum. The portal’s own FAQ was not visible to us, and each posting sets its own rule.
Can first-year students apply? Registration is open to enrolled students. Some cohorts accept any year, but many postings expect coursework.
Is an internship compulsory for graduation? That depends on your college and programme. UGC’s guidelines make a short internship mandatory in UG programmes, and AICTE recommends 14 to 20 credits for degree students.
How many credits is a four-week internship worth? Under AICTE’s framework, about four, at roughly one credit per full-time week. Under UGC’s framework, a four-week internship is worth more than the 2 to 4 credits UGC expects.
Do part-time internships count? The AICTE policy describes internships as full-time in vacations and part-time during the academic session.
Can I do more than the required credits? Possibly, as extra credit. Ask your college.
Where do I check my college’s rules? Your programme handbook, the training and placement cell, and the university’s academic notices.
