AICTE Free Online Courses 2026: How to Enrol and Get a Certificate

By Yuvraj Nimankar | Updated 30 October 2026

This is an unofficial explainer. We are not AICTE, the Ministry of Education, NTA, NPTEL or the operators of any platform named here.

Search for “AICTE free online courses” and you will find a dozen guides promising a free course and a free certificate in one click. The reality is less tidy. There is no single AICTE course website where you enrol, learn and download a certificate. AICTE’s free learning reaches students through several different doors, and each door has a different answer to the question that matters most: who pays for the certificate?

This guide maps those doors, shows what each one costs at every step, gives you a simple way to pick the right one, and explains how to turn a finished course into something a college or recruiter will accept.

How we checked. We reviewed official SWAYAM and NTA material surfaced in search results, plus third-party guides and news items, between 28 and 30 October 2026. We did not log in, enrol in a course or sit an exam. Statements are labelled Official (from a SWAYAM or NTA page or document) or Reported (from a guide or news item we could not confirm at the source). Fees and dates change each semester, so confirm them on the course page before you pay or plan.

The one idea that clears up most confusion

On the main government route, learning is free but certification is not. SWAYAM’s own FAQ says courses are free to learners, while students who want a certificate write a proctored exam that carries a nominal fee (Official). So “free course with certificate” is really two products:

  1. The course: videos, readings, assignments. Free.
  2. The certificate: earned through a proctored exam, paid per course.

Everything else in this post is a variation on that split.

A map of the four doors

Door What it is Learning cost Certificate cost Best for
SWAYAM (AICTE as a course provider) National platform of the Ministry of Education; AICTE is one of the coordinators whose courses appear on it Free Paid proctored exam Credits and a government-recognised certificate
NPTEL on SWAYAM IIT and IISc courses, 4 to 12 weeks Free Reported at ₹1,000 per course, with concessions for some categories Technical and engineering depth
AICTE virtual internships Short, project-based programmes run with partners such as EduSkills and Edunet, applied for through the internship portal Free (Reported) Reported as free, issued by the partner Resume-building with projects
AICTE ELIS and ATAL Academy An older learning platform (ELIS) and faculty development programmes (ATAL) Reported free Reported free for ATAL; ELIS status unclear Faculty (ATAL); treat ELIS with caution

If a guide says “AICTE course” without saying which of these it means, it is skipping the part that decides what you pay.

Door 1: SWAYAM, where AICTE courses actually live

SWAYAM carries courses from several national coordinators, including AICTE, which a Class Central listing shows contributing titles across technical, management, health and vocational subjects (Reported). A learner enrols on swayam.gov.in at no cost.

How the semester cycle works

SWAYAM runs two semesters each year, January and July (Reported). The pattern we saw for 2026:

  • Enrolment on the portal opens first and closes a few weeks into the course.
  • Exam registration is a separate step with its own deadline and its own payment.
  • The proctored exam is held at a physical centre in India, even though the course is online (Reported).
  • Certificates are issued after the results.

One report says the July 2026 semester follows the same two-phase cycle, with exams expected in November and December 2026 (Reported). Treat that as a planning estimate, and check the SWAYAM and NTA home pages for the confirmed dates.

The fee, step by step

The NTA bulletin we found lists ₹750 for the first course and ₹600 for each additional course for general category candidates, with a lower fee for reserved and EWS categories (Official). A Careers360 explainer reports ₹500 for reserved categories; confirm the exact figure in the current bulletin.

Our arithmetic, not an official figure: three courses in one semester through NTA would cost ₹750 + ₹600 + ₹600 = ₹1,950 for general category candidates.

The pass rule

A Collegedunia summary reports that you need at least 40 out of 100 in both the internal assignment assessment and the proctored exam independently to be certified (Reported). Skipping assignments can cost you the certificate even if you do well in the exam. Check the course page for its own weighting.

The enrolment trap

A guide we reviewed says self-paced courses give no certificate at all (Reported). If you want a certificate, make sure you join a scheduled course in its semester window and register for the exam, rather than a recorded archive.

Door 2: NPTEL, the technical heavyweight

NPTEL courses are delivered through SWAYAM, last 4, 8 or 12 weeks, and are offered by the IITs and IISc (Reported). Learning is free. A report quoting SWAYAM’s NPTEL coordinator page states that an in-person, proctored certification exam is optional and costs ₹1,000 per course (Reported).

The July 2026 NPTEL timeline in one report is a useful illustration of how tight the windows are (Reported):

  • Enrolment opened on 27 May 2026.
  • Exam registration opened on 20 June 2026.
  • Enrolment closed in August after an extension, with exam registration closing a few weeks later.
  • Exams were held on dates in September and October 2026.

Practical rules from that report: use the same email ID for everything, because assignments submitted from a different email may not count towards certification, and upload a valid certificate if you are claiming a fee concession, because an invalid one can cancel the registration without a refund (Reported).

Our arithmetic: three NPTEL exams at ₹1,000 each is ₹3,000, unless you qualify for a concession.

Door 3: AICTE virtual internships, the actually-free route

If your goal is a certificate with no exam fee, the AICTE internship portal is where reported free options appear. Examples in news coverage include programmes run with EduSkills (a free, eight-week, self-paced virtual internship in AI, ML and data science, with a certificate from EduSkills and recognition from AICTE) and with Edunet and Shell (a free four-week Skills4Future virtual internship) (Reported).

Two honest cautions:

  • The certificate usually comes from the partner organisation, not from SWAYAM, so it is a different credential from a SWAYAM or NPTEL certificate.
  • Seats, eligibility and deadlines are programme-specific. Several of the listings we saw were from 2025, so they show the format, not what is open today.

For how the internship portal itself works, see our [AICTE internship portal guide: add link].

Door 4: ELIS and ATAL, read before you rely on them

ELIS (Enhancement in Learning with Improvement in Skills) launched in April 2020 at free.aicte-india.org, hosting 26 courses sourced from 18 ed-tech companies, and a news report at the time said it was free until 15 May (Reported). A 2026 guide still lists it as “100% free,” but we could not confirm its current status or terms. Check the site yourself and do not assume an old announcement applies today.

ATAL Academy programmes are faculty development programmes. A guide reports that they are free, funded by the Ministry of Education, with a digital certificate on successful completion (Reported). They are meant for teachers, not students.

Pick your door in three questions

  1. Do you need credits or a government-recognised certificate? Choose SWAYAM or NPTEL, and budget for the exam.
  2. Do you want projects and a free certificate for your resume? Look at AICTE virtual internships first.
  3. Are you a faculty member? Check ATAL Academy.

If you only want to learn, you can audit SWAYAM and NPTEL courses for free and skip the certificate.

Do the credits actually count?

A SWAYAM explainer reports that under the UGC Regulations, 2021, up to 40% of a semester’s courses can be taken through SWAYAM and credit-transferred to your degree (Reported). That is a ceiling, not a guarantee. Your college decides whether a given course counts. Ask your department before you enrol, and get the answer in writing.

When “free” turns into “pay now”

  • Partner platforms that charge. One AICTE-linked training provider’s own page describes a “Make Payment” step to access its courses, alongside statements about its MoUs and credit approvals. Being a partner of AICTE or approved on SWAYAM Plus does not make a course free. Read the payment step.
  • Anyone using AICTE’s name to collect money. SWAYAM and NTA fees are paid on their own official sites. Do not pay through a messaging app or a link sent to you.
  • “Guaranteed certificate” promises. A real SWAYAM certificate depends on assignments and a proctored exam. No one can promise it for a fee.
  • Old announcements. The ELIS example above shows how a time-limited offer from 2020 can still circulate as if it were current.

Making the certificate worth something

  1. Register for the exam early. Missing the registration deadline is the most common way to lose a semester’s work, since enrolment and exam registration are separate (Reported).
  2. Keep your assignment record. Score rules are often per component.
  3. Put the credential on your resume with its exact issuer. “SWAYAM, certified through NTA proctored exam” is more convincing than “AICTE course.”
  4. Tell your college. They may record it, and may approve credits.
  5. Add one project. A course plus something you built is stronger than a certificate alone.

FAQs

Is there one AICTE website for free courses? No single site that covers everything. AICTE courses appear on SWAYAM, and other free offerings sit on the AICTE internship portal and partner pages.

Are AICTE courses on SWAYAM really free? Learning is free. The certificate needs a paid proctored exam (Official).

How much is the SWAYAM certificate exam? The NTA bulletin lists ₹750 for the first course and ₹600 for additional ones for general category candidates (Official). NPTEL is reported at ₹1,000 per course.

Can I take the exam online from home? Reports say the proctored exam is held at physical centres in India, with a hybrid format for some courses (Reported). Check the current bulletin.

Can I get a certificate without paying? Not through SWAYAM or NPTEL. Free certificates are reported from some virtual internship programmes, issued by the partner.

Do I need to be an engineering student? No. SWAYAM covers school to postgraduate levels and many streams (Reported).

Can I enrol in several courses? Yes, and the NTA fee for additional courses is lower. Plan your study load first.

What if I miss the exam registration? You usually wait for the next semester, so treat the deadline as seriously as the enrolment date.

Will my college accept the credits? Only if it agrees. Ask before enrolling.
