This is an unofficial explainer. We are not AICTE, the Ministry of Education or the operators of the portal. It is published by Saiket Systems, whose own internships are separate from the National Internship Portal.
The National Internship Portal by AICTE says it charges students nothing, but “free” means less than most students assume. It covers the platform. It does not cover your travel, your time or a stipend, and a few postings attach conditions to the certificate. This guide separates what is free, what costs you indirectly, what pays, and how to tell a real portal posting from a lookalike. For the full list of opportunities, see our [opportunities guide: add link].
What we checked
We read the portal’s home page and its government-scheme pages on 17 October 2026, along with archived and current posting excerpts surfaced in search. We could not log in or browse live postings. Postings written by hosts vary in detail, so treat our examples as illustrations, not a price list.
What “free” covers
| Item | What the portal says |
| Registration | ₹0 for students |
| Applying and shortlisting | ₹0 |
| Completion certificate | ₹0 |
| Reporting a charge | The portal asks you to write to internship@aicte-india.org if anyone demands money for mentorship, training or skilling |
Those four lines are the portal’s own statements. They do not say you will be paid, that your travel is covered, or that every certificate is automatic.
The costs “free” leaves out
| Cost | Who bears it | What we saw |
| Travel and stay | Varies by posting | An archived highway-ministry posting said the implementing agency would provide stay and transport. The NHAI programme page lists a site travel allowance. Most postings do not say, so ask |
| Equipment and software | Usually you | Not stated in the postings we saw |
| Relocation to a city | You, unless the posting says otherwise | Many government postings are place-bound |
| Your time | You | A semester-length internship competes with exams |
| College permission | You, via your college | Needed if you want credits or your college requires it |
| Conditions on the certificate | Built into the posting | See below |
Read the “terms of engagement,” “perks” and “who can apply” boxes before you apply. A posting that is free to enter can still be expensive to attend.
Stipends: the posting decides
The portal’s NHAI and TULIP pages say selection and stipend are decided per posting by the host, and that a stipend, where declared, is paid monthly through the portal. Nothing guarantees a stipend. The examples below show the spread, with the sources and dates stated.
| Posting | Stipend | Duration | Credits | Source and date |
| Highway ministry, final-year B.Tech civil, national highway projects | ₹10,000 a month | 3 months | Not shown | Archived portal posting, 2023 |
| TULIP, a municipal council in Karnataka | ₹5,000 a month | 12 weeks | 0 | Archived portal posting, 2024 |
| Juniper Networking Cloud virtual internship (EduSkills) | ₹0 | 2 months | 2 | Portal posting, April 2026 |
| AWS Cloud GenAI virtual internship (EduSkills) | ₹0 | 8 weeks | Not shown | Portal posting, June 2026 |
| TULIP municipal finance intern, a state mission unit | ₹10,000 a month, 26 credits, as reported | 6 months | 26 | A third-party summary; closed on 8 October 2026; unverified |
Two lessons follow. First, “free internship” can mean a ₹0 training cohort or a ₹10,000 government placement, and the portal’s label does not tell you which. Second, credits range from none to 26 across the examples, so your college’s rules matter more than the portal’s headline.
Free does not always mean automatic
The archived highway-ministry posting is a useful warning. It required a minimum CGPA of 7.0, said agencies would assess a presentation and report, set a pass mark of 75, and said the final decision on whether to issue the certificate rested on the score. This is an older posting, so current ones may differ. It shows that “completion certificate ₹0” can still depend on passing an assessment.
Do the same check for any posting: is the certificate issued on completion or on assessment? Does the posting list a minimum grade? Is there a report or presentation to submit?
Freshers: can you use the portal?
The student registration form asks for a student ID and an ID card image, so it is built for enrolled students. The home page lists a separate “Young Professional” login without explaining it. Some postings aim at recent graduates. A third-party summary of the TULIP finance posting above describes it as for finance, commerce and economics graduates. We could not confirm that on the portal.
If you have already graduated, check each posting’s “who can apply” box, and write to the helpline before you invest time. A fresher who still has a valid student ID has the clearest path.
Free to join, paid certificate: a different model
Many private programs outside the portal are free to join but charge for an optional certificate. That model is legitimate when it is clearly stated, but it is not the same as the portal’s ₹0 certificate. Our own program works this way. Saiket Systems lists its internships at saiketsystems.in/internships, joining is free, the internship is unpaid, and the certificate is an optional extra under the provider’s terms, which you should read before you choose a route. It is not part of the National Internship Portal.
To compare any two programs, ask three things. Is joining free? Is the certificate free? Who issues the certificate, and can anyone verify it online?
Spotting a fake “free AICTE internship”
Lookalike sites exist. Domains such as aicteinternship.com are not the portal, and the portal’s address is internship.aicte-india.org. Some unofficial sites headline stipends from ₹5,000 up to ₹60,000, which you cannot trust without checking the portal posting itself.
| Warning sign | What to do |
| A different domain from internship.aicte-india.org | Do not enter your Aadhaar or ID there |
| A fee to “book a seat,” “verify” your profile or release a certificate | Stop and write to internship@aicte-india.org |
| An application link sent over a messaging app | Search for the host on the portal and apply there |
| A very high stipend with no posting on the portal | Search the portal for the posting; if it is absent, do not proceed |
| Pressure to decide within hours | Real postings show an “Apply by” date you can read |
| Payment or chat requests moved off the portal | The portal says stipends are never negotiated in direct messages |
A reliable test is to search the portal for the host’s name and see whether the posting appears, with a stipend line, an “Apply by” date and a credits line.
Reading a posting’s money lines
| Line | What it tells you | What to check |
| Stipend | Monthly pay, if any | A figure of 0 or no figure at all |
| No. of credits | Academic credits attached | Whether your college counts them |
| Perks | Certificate and extras | Whether the certificate is conditional |
| Terms of engagement | Rules the host sets | Attendance, assessment, reports |
| Duration and start date | Time you must commit | Clash with exams |
| Apply by | Deadline | Whether the date has passed |
Hosts write these boxes themselves, so quality varies, and some contain typos or gaps. Ask the host through the portal when a line is unclear.

Is it worth it?
Yes, as a free route to verified hosts, a QR-verifiable certificate and sometimes a stipend. It works best if you read each posting for its real cost, compare the stipend and credits with your own needs, and apply only inside the portal.
It is weakest as a source of income, since many postings pay nothing and the figures above show the range. Treat a stipend as a bonus, not a plan.
A five-minute check before you apply
- Is the posting on internship.aicte-india.org?
- Does it show a stipend, a credits figure and an “Apply by” date?
- Where will you work, and who pays for travel and stay?
- Is the certificate automatic, or does it depend on a score?
- Does your college accept it, and do you need approval?
FAQs
Is the portal really free? The portal says registration, applications, shortlisting and the completion certificate cost students nothing.
Will I get a stipend? Not necessarily. Each host decides, and the examples above range from ₹0 to ₹10,000.
Can a host charge me a fee? The portal says no, and asks you to report anyone who does.
Does every free internship give credits? No. The postings we saw show 0, 2 and 26, so ask your college.
Can I get a certificate if I miss the assessment? It depends on the posting. The archived highway posting tied the certificate to a score.
How do I check an offer I received on a messaging app? Search the portal for the host’s name. If no posting exists there, treat the offer as unverified.
Who do I ask for help? The helpline on 011-29581423 or 07314624949 on weekdays, or internship@aicte-india.org.
