AICTE Free Internship 2026: Who Can Apply, Eligibility, Stipend

By Yuvraj Nimankar | Updated 21 October 2026

AICTE Free Internship 2026 helps students explore internship opportunities through the National Internship Portal without paying registration, application or completion certificate fees. However, free registration does not mean every internship offers a stipend or that all expenses are covered. This guide explains eligibility, what’s free, what’s not, stipend details and how students can apply online.

“Free” is the most repeated word in AICTE internship headlines, and also the most loosely used. On the National Internship Portal it has a precise meaning: students pay nothing to register, apply, be shortlisted or receive the completion certificate. It does not mean every internship pays a stipend, every posting is open to you, or the whole experience costs you nothing. This guide separates those questions, shows who can apply at each level, and lists the real costs a free portal still leaves with you.

Evidence labels. Portal means a statement from the portal’s own home page, which we read on 17 October 2026. Reported means a third-party guide or news item we could not confirm on the portal. We did not log in, so we could not check individual postings, stipends or deadlines. Each posting sets its own rules.

The free ledger: what costs nothing and what does not

Read this table before any headline.

Thing Free to you? Source What to know
Registration Yes Portal One student profile
Applying to postings Yes Portal Each posting has its own deadline
Shortlisting by a host Yes Portal Employers respond inside the portal
Completion certificate Yes Portal QR-verifiable; the host must mark completion
A stipend Only if the posting declares one Portal Not every posting pays
Credits Only if your college approves Portal The portal records, your institute decides
Travel, rent, food No Reported Matters for on-site postings
Laptop and internet No Reported Needed for remote work
Paid courses attached to a program Possibly Reported Some partner programs have their own terms
Your time No Portal Up to six months or more for longer formats
Your personal data Not free of consequence Portal Registration asks for an ID card image and an Aadhaar number

The portal also says it asks students to report anyone who charges money, which implies that charges outside the portal’s free list are not part of the official process. Write to internship@aicte-india.org if that happens.

The costs a free portal still leaves with you

1. Time

A weekly internship takes a month at most. A semester internship takes half a year or more. If you are unpaid, that time is the price. Check duration against your exam calendar before you apply, not after you are selected.

2. Money, for on-site roles

Public-sector and mission postings are often location-bound. A stipend, where declared, may not cover rent in another city. The Remote & Hybrid view exists to help you avoid this, but a filter shows what is listed, not what suits your budget.

3. Data

Registration asks for an ID card image (JPG, JPEG or PNG, under 3 MB) and an Aadhaar number. Read the portal’s Terms and Privacy Policy before registering. Enter your details only on internship.aicte-india.org, and type that address into your browser yourself instead of following a link from a message.

4. Your college’s attention

Your institute validates your profile and availability, and decides credits. The portal cannot speed that up. If your training and placement officer is slow, your applications are slow.

5. Attention to what else is attached

Reported guides say some large partner-led programmes require an additional registration outside the portal, and that missing it can affect certificate eligibility. That extra step is separate from the portal’s free registration. Read the posting’s instructions fully.

Who can apply

Eligibility has three layers. A yes at one does not carry to the next.

Layer 1: the portal. You need to be an enrolled student with a student ID and an ID card image. The registration screen offers Student Candidate, then AICTE affiliated or Non-AICTE (Portal). So UGC, IGNOU and other students are included at this level. Some third-party guides say AICTE-approved institutions only, or that AICTE students get preference. Treat the first claim as outdated and the second as possible but unconfirmed.

Layer 2: the programme. Government mission pages and partner programmes each set their own audience. The home page names TULIP, NHAI, MoRTH, AMRUT, C-DAC, the Indian Army and state departments (Portal). Many are location-bound and have their own rules. A February 2026 news item (Reported) describes a virtual internship aimed at final-year and pre-final-year B.Tech and B.E. students, which shows how narrow a programme can be even when the portal is broad.

Layer 3: the posting. The posting’s “who can apply” section can set degree, specialisation, year, graduation window, CGPA, availability and location. The portal has no minimum CGPA or year of study that applies to everyone. Read the section, not the title.

Who can use it, by group

Group Can register? Watch out for
Engineering students Yes The most competition, since the portal calls AI, ML and data the most-applied domain
Management, commerce, law, pharmacy, agriculture, hotel management Yes, streams are listed on the home page Fewer postings in some streams, so search by keyword
Diploma and polytechnic students Yes, if enrolled Postings that want a year of coursework
UGC university students Yes, via Non-AICTE Postings that prefer AICTE institutes
IGNOU and distance learners Yes, via Non-AICTE Confirm your ID type with the helpline
First-year students Several guides say yes (Reported) Many postings prefer later years; the posting decides
Recent graduates Unclear Registration asks for a student ID; ask the helpline first
International students Unclear One guide says Indian students only; we could not confirm it

Is it paid? What the evidence says

The honest answer is that the portal declares stipends per posting and pays monthly where declared (Portal). It does not promise that everyone is paid.

Two details are worth knowing:

  • Conflicting wording. The registration page uses the phrase “Verified Monthly Stipend Guarantee,” while the About page says stipends apply across most partners (Portal). That is not the same as a guarantee for every posting. The posting is the authority.
  • Reported figures vary widely. Third-party news items describe individual programmes paying roughly ₹10,000 to ₹16,000 a month for two-month roles, and one guide cites ₹5,000 to ₹25,000 across the portal. Some are described as “up to” or performance-based. Treat these as examples of what some postings offered, not what you will get.

The portal also says stipends are never negotiated in direct messages. If a host asks to move payment or conversation off the portal, stop.

What the numbers say about free registration

A Times of India report summarising AICTE’s 2025–26 figures (Reported) gives the following, and the portal’s home page shows the same 79,57,193 internships figure.

Reported figure Value
Student registrations 4.7 crore
Verified learners 2.9 crore
Internship opportunities 79,57,193
Completed internships 32,78,900
Colleges 12,077
Domains 200

Our arithmetic, which is not an official statistic: completed internships equal about 7 for every 100 registrations, and about 41 for every 100 opportunities posted. These mix cumulative counts over different periods, and some registered students never apply, so none is a selection rate.

What they do show is that registration is free and easy, and completing an internship is much less common. Free access is not the same as an easy path.

Where “free” gets exploited

Free is also what scammers imitate. Watch for:

  • A fee in AICTE’s name. The portal says registration, applications, shortlisting and the certificate are free. Treat any request for a “processing” or “certificate” fee as a reason to stop, and report it.
  • “AICTE approved” providers. Providers outside the portal sometimes use AICTE’s name in their own materials. That does not make them part of this platform. Ask for the approval reference in writing and look for the posting on the portal itself.
  • Off-portal contact. Messages that push you to chat elsewhere or pay quickly are a warning sign.
  • Look-alike sites. Use only internship.aicte-india.org.

The portal says employers are vetted through a KYC desk. We cannot audit that, so keep checking the host yourself.

A two-minute money check before you apply

Question Where to look Warning sign
Does it pay? Stipend line A figure promised outside the portal
Does anything cost me? Posting body and instructions A fee, deposit or paid course
Is there a second registration? Posting instructions A step outside the portal you did not plan for
Can I afford the location? Mode and location On-site in a city you cannot reach
How long is the commitment? Duration A length that clashes with exams
Who certifies? Certificate note A different issuer from the host
When does it close? Last date A deadline within days

Registering, briefly

Registration is a single screen, and the portal shows about four minutes for it. Type the address yourself, choose Register Free, select Student Candidate, pick AICTE affiliated or Non-AICTE and search your institute, fill in your details, upload your ID card image, enter your Aadhaar number, set a security question and a password of at least eight characters with upper-case, lower-case and a number, accept the terms and select Register Account. See our [registration guide: add link] for each field.

Is it worth it?

Yes, for most students. The financial downside is close to zero, and the portal puts credit-linked and public-sector postings in one place. The real costs are time, your data, and whatever the individual posting asks of you.

It works best if you finish your profile, get your college to validate it, read the stipend and instructions in every posting, and apply to several. It does not promise a stipend, an internship or credits.
